Nearly a Century of Pioneering Spirit in Samnaun
The Beginning of a Success Story
The success story of the Zegg family is closely tied to the development of Samnaun. Although the mountain village had held duty-free status since 1892 due to its geographical location, Serafin Zegg recognized the extraordinary potential of duty-free shopping in the 1930s. With vision and foresight, he opened the first specialty shops for travelers, laying the foundation for commercial duty-free trade in Samnaun. His vision permanently shaped the economic development of the region.
From Retail to Top-Tier Hospitality
This success story was seamlessly continued by the next generation. Hubert Zegg, alongside his wife Eliane Zegg, steadily expanded the family enterprise and set new standards—both in retail and in hospitality. As early as 1934, Hotel Silvretta was established as Samnaun's largest and most modern hotel at the time. Another milestone followed in 1966 with the opening of Chasa Montana, which elevated the region's tourism offerings—particularly in the luxury segment—to a whole new level. Chasa Montana has been a member of Relais & Châteaux since 2014 and, since 2022, holds the distinction of being the only 5-Star Superior hotel in Samnaun.
A Sense for Exclusivity
While Hubert Zegg drove the strategic development of the company and the expansion of tourism, Eliane Zegg played a decisive role in shaping the exclusive character of the stores. With her fine sense for quality, style, and international trends, she established a carefully curated range of luxury watches, jewelry, fashion, and perfumes. In doing so, she built ZEGG into a renowned destination for discerning clientele far beyond the region.
Pioneering Spirit for Tourism
However, the family’s entrepreneurial vision extended far beyond hotels and retail. In the 1970s, Hubert Zegg was one of the driving forces behind the founding of the Samnaun cable car company (Bergbahnen Samnaun). This visionary commitment laid the foundation for the eventual merger with Ischgl and the development of today’s internationally renowned Silvretta Arena—one of the premier ski resorts in the Alps.
The Third Generation Shapes the Future
Now in its third generation, the family remains true to its philosophy of combining tradition with innovation. Today, Olivier Zegg, together with his wife Monique Zegg, leads ZEGG Hotels & Stores, driving the company forward with a clear vision for the future. A visible symbol of this innovative spirit is the comprehensive transformation of Chasa Montana. In 2022, the property was repositioned as a luxurious 5-Star Superior hotel and has since reaffirmed its status as one of the leading resort hotels in the Swiss Alps. Together with its Relais & Châteaux membership, Chasa Montana today stands for the highest standards of quality, culinary excellence, and genuine hospitality.
In parallel, Natascha Zegg serves as host and Managing Director of the Apparthotel Nevada and the Nevada Shops. Through her commitment, she contributes significantly to the quality, hospitality, and ongoing development of the corporate group.

Today, ZEGG Hotels & Stores stands for world-class hospitality and exclusive shopping in Samnaun. Three hotels and eight premium stores spanning watches, jewelry, fashion, and haute parfumerie define the enterprise, alongside around 200 team members from numerous nations during the winter season. This makes the Zegg family one of the region's most prominent employers and influential entrepreneurial dynasties—a success story shaped for nearly a century by vision, quality consciousness, and authentic hospitality.
